Talking Body Type
- May 04, 2015
When it comes to shopping, finding the perfect pair of jeans is the great equalizer bringing everyone to their knees who doesn't happen to be average height with an average build. For ladies, figuring out what fits their figure is a little bit easier since their body type, and how to dress for it, has been burned onto the back of their skulls since age 12. For guys, not so much. Sadly, not knowing your shape and what suits it happens to be the reason why you can’t find the perfect pair of jeans.
As far as body types go, guys get off pretty easy. Instead of being broken down into random fruits or letters, men generally fall into one of five categories: trapezoid, inverted triangle, rectangle, triangle, or oval. If you paid attention during geometry, figuring out which shape you are should be the easiest part of getting your wardrobe in order.
With all this in mind, I’m going to give you a quick course into identifying your body type and will circle back in a few weeks with some basic do’s and don’ts.
Guys who have a trapezoid body type tend to have broad shoulders and chest with relatively narrow waist and hips. Typically this is the easiest shape to dress since the upper body and lower body are fairly balanced. Mr. Trapezoid, the rest of us hate you.
The Inverted Triangle
Like Mr. Trapezoid, the inverted triangle also has broad shoulders and chest but his hips and waist are much narrower. This means your upper torso is a lot wider than your lower torso and the entire lower half of your body. Think athletic types and guys who do all arms and no legs.
Guys with this body type tend to have shoulders that are the same width as their waist and hips. The challenge dressing this body type is to make your shoulders appear wider to give you more of a trapezoid shape. Trust me, it’s easier than it sounds.
If your chest and shoulders are narrower than your waist and hips, you are probably a triangle. Men who fall into this category appear larger at the bottom half of their torso and may have a sloping shoulder line.
An oval body appears round, especially at the center of the body, with narrow shoulder and slim legs. You know, like an oval. This is the shape that most men find they fall into as they get older.
Whether you are a trapezoid, oval, square pants, or a rhombus, with a little clever dressing you can look GQ fresh heartbeat without breaking the bank or becoming a hypebeast, but we’ll talk about that next time.
